Concept Art

While not a definitive guide, this is an overview of some of the concept art work I have done for various projects. For prospective employers and collaborators more can be found in the password protected part of my website, indicated by the padlock emoji in the header menu.

Gearshift

Gearshift is a short animated film I developed at the Royal Danish Academy with my friend and classmate Elin Van Bussel.

Given the chance to make whatever we wanted, we settled on a story about a young boy on his bicycle desperately chasing an ice cream van. We worked on it for four months in early 2025.

Early concept art of the protagonist shows attention to practicalities: one trouser leg tucked into a sock for cycling, equipment, runners. Out of these iterations a clear favourite emerged: a boy in blue.

Storyboard sample - keeping it simple.

Concepts of the ice cream van (rusted, in poor shape) and the world in general. Colour keys and an event map.

After the concept art, storyboard and colour keys, I began to paint detailed 2D backgrounds.

Below you can see the process of concept art -> substance painted 3D model -> position model in 3D space -> add layered 2D background. This is made clearer in the videos below.

Two Is Dead

I worked on Two Is Dead as a personal animation project in early 2024.

It was intended to be a short concept trailer for a sci-fi story, in which a spaceship transporting an important political prisoner crashes on a strange planet, leaving her and her hostile guard to fend for themselves.

Below are some of the backgrounds, concepts and still frames.

Below you can see some assorted concept work from 2026.
